OpenAI has made this announcement live in their 12 day’s announcement “Ship-Mas”. As we are in the second week of this event and OpenAI’s CEO Mr. Sam Altman has dropped many groundbreaking christmas gifts. Firstly he launched OpenAI Sora which is an AI video generation platform and then ChatGPT’s new o1 LLM and now making ChatGPT accessible using WhatsApp.
Now you don’t need to access ChatGPT using seperate app. Although you can use it for text as well as voice based functions but it still has some limitations.

OpenAI’s CEO has announced a service named 1-800-ChatGPT which will be used to connect users ChatGPT using WhatsApp. Except Canada and US countries users can access ChatGPT using WhatsApp through a dedicated QR Code available on OpenAI’s official website.
If you are based in Canada or US then you can simply dial these digits 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) and you’ll either interact with a Chatbot through call or text message.

This movement has arrived with an array of features that you can enjoy. Below are those key features:
- You can initiate chat with ChatGPT using WhatsApp.
- If you’re based in Canada or US then you can do voice interactions with ChatGPT with ease.

What About Limitations?
Ofcourse it has limitations as it only allows text and voice ( Specefically for US & Canadian Users) based functionalities. Although officially said that in future it will serve more splendid features. As of now users will miss a few things such as:
- Since it’s just a start you can not initiate group chat or group based discussions.
- Users are only get 15 minutes of free voice call monthly and text interactions are also limited.
- You will only be able to access it with information till October 2023.
- As chat history as well as memory settings are included so you will probably miss this feature.
- You won’t be able to use it fully such as mixed or custom interactions or image interactions.
Competition with Meta AI
OpenAI’s move towards making ChatGPT accessible in WhatsApp has made it very clear that Meta won’t be the only one who’s going to serve AI functions to WhatsApp Users. Although Meta AI is first mover but we can’t claim which will entertain users perfectly. From user’s perspective it will give users more options to make communications more effective.

- Since this feature doesn’t cover chat history or privious interactions then in upcoming update we can see chat history backup improvement.
